Little Carpathian wine route

Location: Bratislavský kraj, okres Pezinok, Pezinok

GPS: N48°17'12'' E17°16'15''

At the bottom of the Little Carpathians, in the western part of Slovakia, there is a zone of villages and towns, which has been given the epithet "winemaking". These form the Little Carpathian wine region, the area and importance of which is the largest in Slovakia.

The Little Carpathian wine route follows the route of the surrounding Little Carpathian villages through the old crown cities of Bratislava (Bratislava), Szentgyörgy (Svätý Jur), Bazin (Pezinok), Modor (Modra) and ends in Nagyszombat (Trnava).

In addition to the cultural-historical monuments, visitors are interested in the peculiarities of the folk culture in the individual villages, so they are happy to sit in the wine cellars and listen to the folk songs with a roast goose leg or perhaps a glass of wine.

The largest wine region is divided into 12 wine-growing districts, which include 120 settlements. The vineyards are spread in a uniform zone on the hills of the Little Carpathians from Bratislava (Bratislava) in the direction of Bazin (Pezinok) to Felső Diós (Horné Orešany). White grape varieties are produced in this region: Italian Riesling (Rizling vlašský), Rhine Riesling (Rizling rýnsky), Green Veltelín (Veltlínske zelené), Burgundy white (Burgundské biele), Blue Frank (Frankovka modrá) and Szentlőrinci (Svätovavrinecké).

Müller-Thurgau, Silvánske zelené, Dievčie hrozno, Chardonnay and Portugalské modrú complete the range of wine varieties produced here.

Little Carpathian vintage

The traditional harvest celebrations fall in the second half of September, of which the Bratislava-Racsa, Pezinok and Modor harvest celebrations are famous. This primarily praises the work of the local winemakers and vintners, as well as the products they produce - grapes and wine.

The atmosphere of fun here attracts more visitors every year. While in the past the locations of the celebrations alternated, they are currently only held in September, but still attract tens of thousands of visitors.

The so-called new wine lovers of meat can also indulge their desires, they can serve various meat and sweet preparations here, which smell intoxicating, but also those who want to buy industrial goods, or who like folk folklore, a variety of music, or simply want to have fun. The culmination of the celebration is the allegorical parade, in the framework of which the individual grape-producing villages and the best winegrowers present their products, which can only be a stimulus for the eyes and the mouth. Its accompanying phenomena are fun and entertaining competitions, classic carousels, and fireworks.

Tokaj wine route

Location: Košický kraj, okres Trebišov, Čerhov

GPS: N48°27'43'' E21°38'28''

Tokaj wine is rightly considered to be the "king of wines and the wine of kings", because in the past it could not be missing from the table of any European ruler. The gateway to the Tokaj wine region in Slovakia is the town of Tőketerebes (Trebišov).

Nowadays, the Tokaj wine route, which has its center in Kis and Nagytornya, welcomes its visitors with ten varieties of wine (among the best known are Tokaj aszú/Tokajský výber, available from three to six bottles), which has won numerous awards outside the borders of Slovakia.

The interesting thing about the wine route is the volcanic origin, the so-called medieval Tokaj wine cellars carved into tufa rock. The wine cellars date back to the time of the struggle against the Turks and to some extent were also used to provide protection against marauding bands of robbers. Some of the cellars were excavated to a depth of 8 to 16 meters. Among the most visited are the small and large towers, as well as the wine cellars in the vineyards, where those interested can taste the specialties of the local cuisine in addition to quality wines.

The Tokaj wine region is primarily the birthplace of royal wine, which also hides many undiscovered treasures. All settlements along the Tokaj wine route have a rich past, which contributed to the formation of their present-day character. Today, the secrets of the past are revealed to us by valuable cultural-historical monuments - II. Ferenc Rákóczi's birthplace and the County Hall building in the village of Zemplén, which is considered an important archaeological site. Many small churches of the villages along the wine route are now on the list of national monuments.
