Ipoly Valley

General description, characterization

The section of the Ipoly free from river regulation with the associated habitats. In terms of preserving the natural values of cross-border protected areas, cooperation with Slovak partners is crucial.

The most important bird species of European community importance associated with the area:
  • Breeding species: kingfisher (Alcedo atthis), red heron (Ardea purpurea), gypsy duck (Aythya nyroca), grebe (Botaurus stellaris), brown meadowlark (Circus aeruginosus), harrier (Crex crex), pygmy heron (Ixobrychus minutus) (Lanius collurio).
  • Migratory bird species: Spoonbill (Anas clypeata), Rattlesnake (Anas crecca), Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos), Lenten duck (Anas querquedula), Hemp duck (Anas strepera), Great Mallard (Anser albifrons), Little Mallard (Anser erythropus), Sowing goose (Anser fabalis), Mallard (Aythya fuligula), Red-necked goose (Branta ruficollis), Great gosling (Limosa limosa), Goldfinch (Pluvialis apricaria), Meadow mallard (Tringa glaerola).

The area boasts a variety of habitat types: deciduous forest and various treeless wetlands can also be found here. The greatest value is represented by the unregulated section of the Ipoly River and the various floodplain areas connected to it, with their diverse flora and fauna.

Status of the area within the Natura 2000 network: Special Bird Protection Area
